We have a SunFire 280R with Solaris 9 and for a while now we've
been having problems with kernel patch 117171.
Whenever we apply any version of 117171 to the 280R, a kernel panic
occurs and the system gets caught in a reboot cycle (panic, reboot,
panic, reboot). After booting from cdrom and removing the patch,
the kernel panic is resolved.
This has a number of implications, since it prevents us from
installing 12 other patches that are dependent (either directly or
indirectly) on 117171.
We do not have a Sun support contract for this machine, and so we
cannot open a case with Sun support regarding the problematic patch.
We have one other 280R machine, and we do not have any issues with
117171 on the other 280R.
Does anyone happen to know why 117171 causes a kernel panic on some
280R systems (but not others)? Is this a known issue?
Since the 280R is EOL, are we basically out of luck?
