identity management and single sign on

Hello managers.
My question is about identity management and single sign on This is a bit
broad for the list...

We've been tasked with finding the holy grail of identity management and
single sign on. We have a mix of Windows xp and Max os x clients on the
front end and windows and solaris servers (with a largish hp/ux server) on
the back end. We have the mac clients authenticating against the windows
AD domain and it mostly works (but sometimes we lose the trust between the
mac OD and windows AD servers).
We need to broaden the scope of our directory services and were hoping
that given the long history of Sun's Java identiy management stuff that
it would have the functionality to manage the clients and servers from a
single product with minimal bias (unlike the apple or microsoft products).
Does Sun's product handle non solaris clients? Does it handle Single Sign
On? Does it do screen scraping for text based legacy apps?

I'd take any suggestions, pointers, links or other mostly useful
information.

If anyone asks for it, I will summarize what responses I get back.
