Modification: Splitting a flash archive across multiple DVD's

Just a bit of clarification:

According to Sun I can't get a Sun dual layer DVD burner for the Netra.
The reason they want this is b/c there are currently 15 machines (more
to come) and they don't want to have to hook up external devices in the
field. So an external Dual layer burner isn't an option (I tried
pitching that already ;))

And I would also like to be able to install straight from these DVD's
(if possible). Mike Demarco was nice enough to suggest that if I just
wanted to transport or store the archive that I could split it and then
use 'flar combine' to put it back together when needed. We are going to
be using this archive to build new disks (boot partitions and data
partitions), so if it is possible to store it so that we can install
from the DVD along the lines as we do from tape ( we use 'boot cdrom -
install tape' currently) if I could boot from the Solaris CD-ROM and
then choose flash archive and put the new DVD in would be preferred.
But I don't know if this is even feasible or if I am asking too much.

The end goal is to make this easier on the customer, so if spanning
across DVD's is more work (on the rebuilding side) than the tape I don't
think they would want to change.

I just wanted to see if anyone else knew something I didn't about a
user-friendly way to make this work for our customer.

Thanks again!!

Subject: Splitting a flash archive across multiple DVD's

Gurus,

I am running a Netra 240 with Solaris 8 and a DVD burner and I have been
creating flash archives for a user for some time now, but they have
requested that the archives be burnt to DVD's now rather than tapes as
before. The archives of this system are in excess of 6GB's so they
won't fit on a single DVD. I was wondering if anyone knew if there was
a way to span the archive across multiple DVD's.

I did a bit of Googling, but the only thing relevant I found concerned
me. It was an archive from a previous Sunmanagers question. The
summary said:

The "official" Sun support answer vis a vis having an archive
split over multiple CDs was: "...at this time there is no way to do
this.
[The engineers] said they will revisit this in Solaris 10."

But this is from August of 2003, and I am hoping that someone might know
of a way to do this by now. I looked at flar split but I am unsure that
this is going to give me what I need. Should I just split the archive
and then burn one DVD's worth of data then burn the rest to the other
disc? Is there a particular set of files that must be on the first
disc? This route would require booting off of the Solaris CD then
choosing flash install correct?

Does anyone have any insight into this issue?

Thanks in advance and I will summarize!

Thanks,

Chad Truhn
