The solution:

Thanks to those who pointed me to Sun's instructions on how to build an
.xml file from a legacy RC script. I was able to build it just fine. In
particular the http://www.filibeto.org/~aduritz/ site has lots of documents,
including the slides from the Sun Bootcamp course on converting RC scripts
to .xml files.
