odd library locations

I am trying to run a binary from cron. It was built with reference to a
library in a non-standard place. Adding that not-standard path to root's
LD_LIBRARY_PATH works just fine. However, when I run it from cron it
complains that the library is not found. I have even had cron call a
shell script which set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH and then runs the program.
Copying the needed library into /usr/lib solves the problem, but it is
not very elegant. Is there a way to run a program specifying where to
find libraries?
