Server locks up/Messages file missing

Greetings Gurus:

I have some kind of weird problem where this ultra 80 I'm running all of a
sudden decides to not answer any requests from apache or ssh anymore. You
can telnet to port 80 but a get request gets nothing. You can ssh and it
asks for your password, but then you never get logged in. You can walk to
the console and try to log in via CDE. It will ask for your user name and
password, but never get past the login screen. Selecting "console login"
just gets you a plain white screen. Stop-a is the only remedy.

Sun support had no idea what to try besides looking for core files and
looking at /var/adm/messages. The interesting thing is that I have
/var/adm/messages which begins right after I rebooted, and
/var/adm/messages.0 which ends two days before the problem even happened.

I know there were some messages in there, I mistype my root password all
the time.

Any ideas?
