v20z console port for OS install?

I've got a v20z with no operating system, on which I want to install Solaris
9
(and another that still has the factory install on which I want to reinstall
Solaris 10).

Our SOP would be to hook the machine up to the serial console server, put
in the CD or DVD, and do the install remotely.
I have been unable to successfully do this with the v20z.

Is it *possible* to use the serial console on the v20z before you have
installed the OS, to install the OS?
If so can someone please send idiot-proof steps for doing so?

I've found Sun Spectrum doc 82083 but that seems to assume that you have an
OS in place.
(that doc suggests:
 a) setting the BIOS/Advanced/console redirection , no problem
 b) ssh'ing to the SP and doing a "#platform set console -s sp -S 9600 -e"
then "platform console"
at which point I lose contact with the SP but don't gain contact on the
serial port
 c) rebooting into the OS and setting the eeprom console variables, which
works a lot better after you have an OS <grin>

Thanks for any clues - or if it's impossible please let me know and I'll
stop wasting my time.
