Solaris 8 and Oracle 9i

Hello folks, I have V440 connected to two 3320 arrays and I am not getting
good performance results from my system. I am running Veritas to do stripe
pro across controllers and all that stuff. I have difficult time with our
Oracle DBA's to get the clear picture of what for example /etc/system
settings should be. I did find for example that shminfo_shmmax should be set
to around 60% of physical memory of the system (currently we have 16GIG of
Physical RAM and that setting is set for 12GIG. I did ask them to provide me
with some documents which would describe settings that we would need to set
our box with and their response was it is all fine as it is... It does
bother me because I am not getting good results at all from that system and
that system should fly.. Just to give you some examples.

When I start this V440 server and oracle is not running I see this:
Memory: 16G real, 15G free, 118M swap in use, 21G swap free

When I start oracle, here is what I see:
Memory: 16G real, 3961M free, 11G swap in use, 10G swap free

Why oracle is using so much swap space? This remember is just after oracle
was brought up, no jobs running or anything, just started it... Crazy, there
must be settings that are set incorrectly...

Does anyone have good guides on how to tune up Solaris with oracle, how to
check parameters such as /etc/system and so on. What to look for etc. There
was an excellent document in Sys Admin on how to Optimize Solaris for Oracle
8.x (of course when I did show this to my DBA's they said well this is for
Oracle 8 and not 9i. I am ready to "kill -9" them.. But seriously, if anyone
could help me out and point me to some documents, maybe they could share
some /etc/system settings parameters etc... I would greatly appreciate it...

Once again, my system parameters are:
V440 with 16 GIG RAM
Solaris 8
Oracle 9i (9.2.0.4 to be exact)

Thank you so very much for any help or pointers and suggestions.

Regards,

Chris
