Can any off the shelf IDE HD would work on sunfirev100?

Hi,
All of a sudden my sunfire v100 is not booting up. I did a probe-ide on OK
prompt and it did recognize my HD (ST34000) on secondary master (primary
master and slave are not present). The boot process gives "Waiting for
ARP/RARP packets". If booted from cd [boot cdrom] it probes the devices and
keeps on resetting itself. I am suspecting my hard drive to be toast. (Not
sure why it is not booting up from the CD though).

Q1. What seems to be the problem?

Q2. If I buy off the shelf any IDE hard drive, say Seagate ST380013ARK, will
it work?
