static IP

Thanks to all of you it now works. I got a total of about 20 responses.
Thank you everyone. Some i did not try like unconfig but it will help
me later on.

I had been entering hostname and IP in my /etc/hostname.eri0 file. I
changed this to only the IP address

Also my /etc/hosts file now has two entries

xxxx.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx hostname
hostname.worcester.edu
127.0.0.1 localhost
loghost

these two changes fixed the problem
