Legato networker and sendmail

I've just reconfigured one of my servers to stop using smail and use
sendmail instead. I've got that mail server routed to it uses another one
as its mail server. This works correctly using several different mail
addresses using sendmail (CLI) and mailx.

However, when Legato Networker sends an email it bounces with:

Aug 7 06:01:51 abyss sendmail[17417]: [ID 801593 mail.info] j77C1oH17412:
to=<foo@gamma.com>, delay=00:00:01, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp,
pri=124266, relay=bar.com. [199.213.46.220], dsn=5.6.0, stat=Data format
error
Aug 7 06:01:51 abyss sendmail[17417]: [ID 801593 mail.info] j77C1oH17412:
j77C1pH17417: DSN: Data format error

...which is exactly the same error message I was getting when mail
masquerading wasn't set up correctly.

Does legato have its own SMTP client built-in?

The CLI for notifications inside Networker (nwadmin) is

/usr/ucb/mail -s "savegroup completion" foo@gamma.com

which works fine from command line.

I don't get it.
