Thanks for everybody who replied, it seem, that this piece of
hardware is not well known/used.

So, after pressuring a bit HP (the tech. support guy was fairly honest
telling me that he know only the Micro$haft stuff), I've been advised
to use the HP Download Manager, which automatically connects to
the HP site and if there is any new firmware it will upgrade the
JetDirect box.

Don't really like black magic, but having nothing else, I followed the
advise, the firmware _was_ upgraded to H.08.49 (from H.08.20), and
things are looking promising, though some more testing is needed.
