Many thanks to those that replied.
The following syntax was correct for the config file:
list = false
hosts allow = 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
Note: The first line prevents remote listing of rsync
modules, and the second line prevents hosts outside of the
specified subnet from transferring files.
