Hello Gurus

I have systems comprising Windows 2000, Linux and Solaris 8. The Backup
Media
is attached to the Windows 2000 server. My question is now I have to take
the
Backup even for Linux as well as Solaris boxes. My questions are:

1) Can I make Windows 2000 ( tape drive is attached to this) as the Master
and
other Unix Systems as Client? if so then what is the Backup software used.

2) I want to go for cost effective backup solutions. Can anyone tell me
which
is the best backup freeware for both Windows as well as Unix.

I appreciate if anyone can suggest me some good and easy to configure backup
solution for cross platforms.

Thanks,
Vani

Hello fellow sunmanagers,

I have a question regarding application support on Solaris 9 with a Netra
440. If this is the wrong forum for application development type of
questions please advise and accept my apologies.

>From what I have been able to determine so far, Solaris 9 does not come
installed with a C++ compiler and in particular any of the Threads
libraries. If this is need, it would have to be purchased and installed
separately.

Would you confirm my current understanding of this.

Thank you,
Brent

Many thanks to Nordbye, Richard, Petri and all.

The recommended tests are given as:
1) HW test -Using SunVTS which is a stress-test-tool that comes together
with Solaris supplemental CDs.
2) SW test - Using the "Sun Install Check" -tool. Available from here
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireV240/SunFireV240.html

Best regards and cheers,

CSW Simon.

When I posted this question many people rudely responded and pointed me
to man page but not even a single person answered my question.
Here is the answer:

I ordered 2 Sun v240s recently but didn't get the CD drives in the
initial order. I've since gotten the drives, but when I try to install
them the OS doesn't seem to recognize them. I've done several reconfig
boots and run devfsadm, but the device never gets created. I can see
it at PROM level with a probe-ide. Does anyone have ideas? I'm
running SunOS 5.9 Generic_112233-12.
TIA,
 Jon

Dear all,
I have read some of the documentation on this matter but am struggling to
make much sense of how to burn dvd's. Could anyone please either provide
some written assistance or point me in the right directionto enable me to
burn DVD's.
Thanks In Anticipation.

I am trying to run a master script as user 1 which requires to su to user 2
to
run a subsequent script. NB Running the subsequent script from interactively
from the prompt of user 2 works fine.
User 1 uses the bourne shell and User 2 uses the c shell.
The following is output to the screen and returns me back to the user 1 on
execution of the master script as user 1:
Execute master cshrc
stty: : Inappropriate ioctl for device
`tty`: Ambiguous
logout
The .login file for the user 2 contains the line "stty -istrip".
Is this what is causing the problem and if so how can this be ignored when
the
script is being run in a non-interactive session?

Hi All,
I have a solaris 8 box, patched with latest patches and TCPwrappers
installed.
tftpd is being controlled by tcpd. My problem is when I try to do a tftp
get from a pc client of a file in /tcpdboot on the solaris box to test
the functionality of tftpd (under tcpwrappers).
The error message which I get on the PC client is: "Error on Server:
Access Violation".
I know that tcpwrappers works fine because tcpdmatch using hosts.allow
and my windows client IP come back ok (allowed) and a tcpdump port 69
gives me the connections coming in from the pc client, although i ge 5
datagrams then the whole connection bails out.
Does anyone know why this is so, ie why my tftp get doesn't work. i've
also tried it using a tftp put from win client -> solaris box.
I will summarise.
TIA,
Regards
dan cave

Hi,
I'm having problems isolating the source of a memory leak in a legacy
system running Solaris 2.6. The TOP utility only gives a partial view.
After some investigation it looks like prstat might provide the info
required. Can I use prstat on Solaris 2.6 without impact?

This is Solaris 9, using the sun-shipped ftp (wu-ftpd).
I want my ftp server to log to a different facility to separate those logs
from other daemons running on this box. I do not find where I specify the
facility to use when using syslog. Where do I specify such an entry? TIA
and I will summarize.

I see in the send mail configuration of my E450 ...multiple email messages
(sometimes more than 200) waiting in que to be delivered.
I see the From address and the To address of these emails are totally
strange to me.
I tried to send a warning email to the email id in the send field and they
always bounce back to me.
The matter is these emails is completely spam ......of get rich schemes or
objectionable adult content.
How can I stop this immediately without shutting down my server or clicking
"stop send mail" .....
