Thanks for the replies. In the end I deleted the non-working configuration
and started again.
I installed patch 112960-18 which became available after I started working
on ldap authentication.
I then followed to the letter the example in the Solaris9 edition of System
Administration Guide: naming and Network Directory Services (DNS, NIS, and
LDAP)

making only the necessary changes for a different server.
After that, ldap worked without any problems.
