NFS file cp's hang dd's don't

I have a NFS mount from one F12K domain to another which contains oracle
archive logs. I have a problem where if I cp the file [on the client] from
the NFS mount to /tmp [as an example] the cp just hangs and a 0 byte file is
created in /tmp. However, if I dd the file [using if & of] the file copies
just fine [the checksums match]. This behaviour appears to be at random, IE
I can cp one file and not another, however if I do it in reverse [IE dd the
file that wont cp] it works fine.

The NFS is over a GB lan and appears to be functioning otherwise, the NFS
mount is mounted RO with no options.

Has anyone got any thoughts on this?

TIA - Kev.
