rsh from Window NT (yuk) to Solaris

It's not my fault! Normally, I would never contaminate a UNIX
environment with contact from windoze. However, in this case, I have no
choice.

My problem is simple (to explain, anyway):

I need to issue a command from NT to the UNIX box. The obvious choice
is the NT 'rsh' command; the problem is, it doesn't work!

I get a "permission denied" error.

I know about the following:

1. One must use a .rhosts on the destination account
2. There is a bug which means that one must use a name in .rhosts
which corresponds to a /etc/hosts entry.
3. I can't use hosts.equiv 'cos that's a security issue. Anyway,
.rhosts should do the same thing.
4. I know about the Solaris 8 bug. I'm trying to contact a Solaris 9 box.

I am also vaguely aware of some issues with TCP timeouts etc, but I
don't think that this is the problem because the NT gurus on my site say
they use it (NT rsh) with no problems. They don't know what the problem
is, either.

I have set up test accounts from UNIX to UNIX and have no problems - so
there's nothing wrong with 'rshd' - at least as far as UNIX is
concerned. I have scanned the web (including this site) for a solution
and gotten nowhere. The Sun site doesn't even know what "windows"
*is*. (Quite right, in my opinion, except that it's causing *me* problems).

Any suggestions?
Should I provide extra info?

  Regards,

    Justin.
