How to configure client VM in S1AS7?

Dear sun managers,

how do i configure a sun ONE application server 7 on solaris 9 on java
1.4.1 to use the client VM instead of the default server VM?

I have tried to pass -client in different places inside the server.xml
already to no avail. Also, setting the system default in
/usr/java/jre/lib/sparc/jvm.cfg to client VM did not help.

Anyone?
