APC Smart-UPS serial link with Netra X1?

I'm having a problem using an APC Smart-UPS with our Netra X1. The X1 has
an RJ45 connector for serial link (much like cisco routers), and the
connector from UPS is DB9. I made a connector to convert the DB9 to RJ45
according to the Netra manual. This is where I think the problem lies.
These are the steps I took to try and verify communication:

1. I tried using the connector I made (RJ45-DB9) connector by hooking it up
to my windows machine, opening up a 2400/8/N baud serial link
(Hyperterminal), then on the Netra opening tip connection with same settings
and I was able to communicate fine back and forth.

2. I then connected the UPS into my windows machine with 2400/8/N serial
link (Hyperterminal) and I was able to communicate with the UPS fine (I send
'Y' it sends back 'SM').

3. I then connected the UPS to a different Sun machine with a normal DB9
serial connector, opened a tip connection and that worked fine.

4. However if I connect the UPS to the Netra using the RJ45-DB9 converter
nothing works, it is setup in the following way:

UPS(DB9F)->APC proprietary DB9 cable->my connector->RJ45 patch cable->Netra
RJ45 serial port (ttyb)

The pinouts I used for my connector are as follows (straight from netra
manual):

RJ45 DB9
------ ------
1(RTS) 8(CTS)
2(DTR) 6(DSR)
3(TXD) 2(RXD)
4(GND) 5(GND)
5(GND) 5(GND)
6(RXD) 3(TXD)
7(DSR) 4(DTR)
8(CTS) 7(RTS)

The cable provided by APC is the 940-0024C. It is a DB9M->DB9F cable. The
pinout diagram can be found here:
http://ups.miem.edu.ru/Cables/9400024C.gif

Has anyone had luck using a Smart-UPS with RJ45 serial link? It seems from
the diagram above that the APC cable uses what is called the DCD (Data
Carrier Detection) line, which does not exist in the 8pin RJ45 serial
connector.

The people at APC have been no help (just sending back knowledgebase
articles I have already found myself). Some sites online say that I need to
disable login on ttyb, I have iterated over every possible setting for ttyb
using admintool and nothing helped.

Thanks in advance, will post summary.
