Thanks to all of those who replied.
My original problem was being unable to get the Ion window manager to
work under solaris x86. Turns out the guy who packaged it accidentally
had paths hardcoded into the binary, so Ion was unable to load the
proper files (config files).
For future reference, try:
# strings binary|grep /
That will show you paths :)
