SUMMARY: No groups for root

Thanks to everyone for your responses ...... I guess if I spent more time
looking around I am sure I would have found this, but pretty much panic'ed
when this happened :)

Tim Pointing nailed it though (his response below) ...... The PATH had
been changed it in the /.profile, and for some reason /usr/bin wasn't in
the PATH anymore .......

All ok now.

Trevor,

Root's path has presumably changed. The "uname" command (/sbin/uname)
is no longer in the search path. The BSD version of "ls" (/usr/ucb/ls)
, which, by default, doesn't show the group, is being run instead of
the normal "ls" (/usr/bin/ls).
