port

Hi gurus,

Our application on our server has been running for
sometime and is using port 4500. When I installed a
software, it's default port is 4500. I was not aware
that the application is already using the same port.
When I accepted the default port (4500) for the
software, the server didn't complain that it's
already/currently being used. When the software was
not installed yet, port 4500 was not listed in
/etc/services even if it's being used by the
application. But when I installed the software, the
/etc/services file got updated. We only noticed the
problem when the server got rebooted after couple of
weeks because the application wont work. I believe the
server used port 4500 for the software that I
installed because it's the one listed in
/etc/services. Am I correct? We changed the port for
the application. It is now working.

I just noticed that the new port for application is
still not listed in /etc/services. What is the
explanation for this? Aside from lsof (we cant have it
installed), how would I check the particular port
being used by a particular process.

Thanks a bunch!

Sunsa
