Fujitsu PW900 performance

Just to share some real world performance comparison :

We moved our DataWarehouse app (ETL with Syncsort/UnixShell/Cobol + Database
[DSS] with Oracle 8.1.7.4-32bits + Solaris 8-64bits) :

- From a Sun E6500 : 18 x Ultrasparc 2 @ 400 Mhz, 24 Gb memory
- To a Fujitsu PW900 : 8 x SPARC64-V @ 1,3 Ghz , 24 Gb memory
- Same Storage : IBM ESS2105-800, 5 Tb RAID-5, 8xFC-AL

For the ETL side, our 100 hours batch is three times faster (35h) : 65%
gain. This is the best we could have expected (CPU/Memory/Bus are 2 to 3
times faster), and this is good to hear that read world experience matches
theory.

Now for the Oracle side, even if we got 50% gain with lightly-loaded
database, we got no significant gain with a fully-loaded database. We
suspect either 8 CPU are not sufficient (even 3 times faster CPU) for the
current workload (many parallel Oracle process), either our Oracle config
(tuning choices) is so bad that a 3 times faster CPU or even more could not
help.
