Thanks everyone for you answers to my questions !!!
Have been out of the game from quite a while and am very rusty :)
Your answers were all right (of course). I needed to put the shell in
/etc/shells.
In response to some of you saying that using ftp as root is a bad ie
sending the password across the network, I just built this box and this is
very temporary till I get ssh installed :)
