What are the advantages (if any) and disadvantages of sharing
directories within a filesystem (as opposed to sharing an actual
filesystem)?
I have always shared entire filesystems, and feel that sharing
directories is a result of a poorly-designed system. I ask this because
my boss is seeking justification (as we continue to build our cluster)
for NOT creating a single, monolithic (447GB) partition from which the
sub-directories would be shared to the NFS clients.
My feeling is that a single, huge partition performs poorly compared to
a few (~10) smaller filesystems -- which, ultimately, is what I'm trying
to determine.
Your feedback (opinions and otherwise) is greatly appreciated, and I
will summarize when my research is complete. Thank you!
