Problem with apache on Solaris 8

I have a strange problem with apache 1.3.26 on Solaris 8 02/02 with latest
recommended patches installed. When I run it I get

Syntax error on line 204 of /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf:

Cannot load /usr/local/apache/libexec/mod_vhost_alias.so into server:
ld.so.1: /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/
local/apache/libexec/mod_vhost_alias.so: symbol ap_pcalloc: referenced symbol
not found

yet the symbol is in the httpd binary :

bash-2.05# nm /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd|grep ap_pcalloc
0000000000012dc4 T ap_pcalloc

A version compiled on ANOTHER Solaris 8 02/02 box (but not patched to the same
level) works fine, also on this box, and compiling apache on this box with
the Forte compiler also works.

The apache configure line is:

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache --enable-module=most \
--enable-shared=max
