patch install fails - checkinstall cannot open file

G'day.

I've got a bit of a nettly problem here. I'm trying to install the
random device patch on a Solaris 8 box. I've done this a number of times
on different boxes, with no problems at all. But on this one (the one
that counts, obviously - the others were just pre-production tests) the
installation crashes. The output follows:

> [root][NONE][firetail][<patchdir>]
> # patchadd 112438-02
>
> Checking installed patches...
> Verifying sufficient filesystem capacity (dry run method)...
>
> Patch 112438-02 failed to install due to a failure produced by pkgadd.
>
> See /var/sadm/patch/112438-02/log for details
>
> Patchadd is terminating.

In the log it says:

> Package not patched:
> PKG=SUNWmdb
> Original package not installed.
> Package not patched:
> PKG=SUNWmdbx
> Original package not installed.
>
> This appears to be an attempt to install the same architecture and

> <patchdir>/112438-02/SUNWcarx.u/install/checkinstall:
> <patchdir>/112438-02/SUNWcarx.u/install/checkinstall: cannot open
> pkgadd: ERROR: checkinstall script did not complete successfully
> Dryrun complete.
> No changes were made to the system.

It seems that the script
<patchdir>/112438-02/SUNWcarx.u/install/checkinstall tries to open a
file. Anyone knows what file this is? The package that is already
installed is SUNWcsr - the kernel. Apart from the ones mentioned, there
is only one other package in the patch, SUNWhea. I notice that in
SUNWcarx.u/reloc is only one file, which appears to be a Solaris 9
driver. Can anyone with some authority state whether my problem will
disappear if I remove SUNWcarx.u altogether - and will my production
system still be stable after installing it?

The Solaris version as shown by showrev is: SunOS 5.8 Generic 108528-13
December 2001. It needs patches, but I am in no position to apply these
now. Can I still hope to install the random device?

TIA

Tony
