ping with timeout, or other tool suggestions

Sun Managers -

I have a large and poorly maintained printer database on my servers.
I want the ability to take the output of lpstat -a, pipe to awk, and
ping each printer. I then want ping to timeout or fail with an error
if it doesn't find the printer on the air, and stop trying after 4 or
5 success with an exit 0, and then go on to the next item in the for
loop.

problem: ping seems to have a count option, but no timeout. In
windows 2000, it nicely pings an IP four times then STOPS. What
options and tools have other people have used in this situation?

Thanks in Advance, Will Summarize.
JV
