Openssh with NIS

We have recently migrated from:

OpenSSH_3.0p1, SSH protocols 1.5/2.0, OpenSSL 0x0090602f

To:

OpenSSH_3.7.1p2, SSH protocols 1.5/2.0, OpenSSL 0.9.7c 30 Sep 2003

We completed the procedure from sunfreeware.com and installed the
version of SSL, libgcc, zlib required as well as patch 112438 for
/dev/random. The problem we are seeing is that we can no longer
authenticate users via NIS. Key authentication via agent forwarding
works fine, so does local user /etc/passwd authentication. Any ideas
what might be causing NIS to break with this new version?

TIA.
