UPS serial connect trouble Solaris 8

I have connected using a 9-pin Canon cable a Fiskars PowerSystem - PowerRite
Max UPS Serial No. C0006/7274 to the 9-pin serial connector on a SunBlade100
running with Solaris 8. Am using a software called JumpView. The previous
software was called PowerFlag, but I don't have a Solaris/UNIX version of
it, and the company was taken over by GE which uses JumpView.

I keep getting the error messages: "Could not open port /dev/ttya" and
also "Unable to establish communication with UPS"

When I do a tip hardwire, I get "all ports busy"

Have tried various settings for ttya, using sacadm, pmadm and the GUI
sysadmin tool for configuring serial devices, but nothing seems to work.
Have tried to follow advice from various web locations, but nothing has
worked so far.

I have been assuming that this connection should be bidirectional, since the
UPS has to communicate to the SunBlade in order to perform a shutdown in
case of power failure and the SunBlade needs to be able to detect that the
UPS is there.

Would greatly appreciate suggestions as to how to troubleshoot this problem.
