I have an odd problem with a downed, unplumbed gigabit nic. My server is a
V480, running Solaris 8 [kernel: Generic_108528-22] and in addition to the
two onboard gigabit nics [ce1,ce2], there is also a gigabit fibre card
[ce0]. Only ce1 has an active, plumbed nic with a working network
connection. During the bootup, I see the following notice & warning
messages in /var/adm/messages, generated through syslogd, repeatedly
without end:

I've had to disable syslogd in order to get the messages to stop. The
server is pretty much in a stock state, as I've only installed the O/S [via
jumpstart] and patches [ie. no applications]. I have set up the
/platform/sun4u/kernel/drv/ce.conf file as follows:
100T4_cap=0 adv_1000fdx_cap=0 adv_1000hdx_cap=0 adv_100fdx_cap=1
adv_100hdx_cap=0 adv_10fdx_cap=0 adv_10hdx_cap=0 adv_autoneg_cap=0;
I believe I've installed all the necessary gigabit-related patches:

Can anyone tell me why the ce0 nic appears to be so active? I set up a
nearly identical V480 a couple of months ago, with the exact same
hardware, and its ce0 gigabit nic shows no activity [ie the logs are not
active, and the nic's LEDs do not blink at all]. Al I want to do is
disable the card completely, without having to physically pulling it from
the server. If anyone has any advice, I'll be greatful and I will
ultimately summarize my findings.
