Folks,

Thanks for all who replied, too numerous to mention.

Basically, my query was what was the best mechanism for synchronising a
number of directories (and their contents) between a local directory on a
secondary file server and corresponding NFS-shared directories from a
primary file server which were mounted on the secondary server.

Among the solutions proposed were

(i) rsync, which is available as freeware from the Samba project.
(ii) rdist, a standard UNIX utility.
(iii) A script based on the 'cp' command, which could be run as a cron job,
which would check for files which were changed since the last
synchronisation and copy only these files
(iv) ufsdump, although using this technique it would be difficult to
facilitate removal of files in the destination directory which had been
deleted in the source directory.

Based on the number of replies I received advocating rsync, I will probably
use this utility.

Thanks again for your assistance,
John Kelly.
