Stubborn HD can't label

I have a couple of Seagate ST34371WC (4G) that mirrored, one HD gone bad
and I need to replace it. However, one of the backup ST34371WC HD is not
able to "relabel" or allow any changes made to the HD.

I have put this HD in one of the sparc workstation, solaris8/9 doesn't
matter, and try format/partition and then label but keeps getting "can't
label". The drive currently has a label and partitions on there, but it
seems I can't make any changes...ie, resize partition, use another label,
if the drive is bad I wouldn't be pondering, but HD is good and I can see
the current label and can use the partitions currently on there.

I have checked the ST34371WC physically and both the working HD and the
stubborn HD seems to have the same settings, no jumpers of any kind that
would prevent writing/modify to the HD.

HELP!!! something I'm missing??? Oh the ST34371WC contains the Sun's
label instead of the Seagate. I have attempted to use both to re-label
the HD but still no go...

Thanks.
