CDE fonts disturbed?

Hello List,

this problem refuses to go away by sitting it out and investigation as well
as browsing the archives (for "CDE small fonts" and similar keywords) didnt
result in any enlightenment so you are kind of my last resort.

Yesterday in the morning, all users of one of our Solaris 8 servers
reported weird behaviour of their CDE, starting with the login screen
(where the fonts are very small and the fourth button of the password
screen, "help", half way disapprears behind the Sun picture on the right)
and continuing with their desktops, which show very tiny fonts.

I could not reproduce it until eventually i tried the previous version of
our PC X server software (X11 server semantics are confusing at times,
right?). Turns out that it looks fine with exceed 7 but exceed 6 is broken;
additionally switching through different locales results in _VERY_ weird
looking desktops (in the sense of funny looking fonts partly lacking local
special characters).

Removing the users' .dt directory seems to help, a new one is getting set
up and all looks good. I know i can diff through them but what really
puzzles me is this: all users on this system are affected. And noone in the
administration is aware of having changed anything, including
/etc/default/init. No new PC client software was installed.

Any ideas? TIA,

Daniel Denes
