Thanks all,
Several folks responded with the proper course of action and the solution.
It turns out our windows system admin folks replaced a DNS server about two
weeks ago...but left the old one up and running for a bit to ease the
transition. I was unaware of the change till today, when they turned it
off.
Here is a summary of the responses
This is a classic symptom of DNS lookup issues. The server tries to do a
reverse-lookup of the IP address of the client system. Anything in DNS
changed lately? Similarly, timeouts with NIS and other directory services
can have this kind of effect.
-- Crist J. Clark Flaky DNS is the most common network issue. Do an nslookup and verify you can resolve the SunFire's hostname. You can also try telnetting from your workstation to the SunFire 3800 using the SunFire's IP address instead of host name and see if that helps. But that might hang for the same reason - due to DNS instabilities, since some versions of Solaris do a reverse DNS lookup before allowing a remote connection. Put your workstation in the SunFire's /etc/hosts and try again. I'm not sure if this is a production machine or a new one you are bringing online, so I don't know how feasible the next suggestions will be. To eliminate LAN or network hardware, connect a crossover cable from a laptop to the SunFire, put your laptop on the same IP subnet and try the connection. Or easier yet, plug your laptop into the LAN wall outlet and see how the laptop does on connection. HTH. ------ I've experienced similar problems. Check the nameservice. I think that the server tries a reverse nameservice lookup (or forward) on the client computer. Joon ----- I would check: Name Service Resolution (forward and reverse) if using automounted home directories, check the automounter anything strange in /var/adm/messages? If I attempt to telnet to the box from another host the login prompt appears after about 30 seconds or so. I took note of the problem when my local xwindows sessions(started via rlogin) started timing out for that host. I have done a netstat, and don't see any errors for any of the interfaces, nor do I see any spurious or unknown connections. I am not sure even the next step of trouble shooting. Any ideas? Sorry for the pausity of information. I am really not very well versed in network issues, but that is likely obvious.
