big difference in df and du output

We are seeing an odd thing, df and du are reporting dramatically different info about /opt usage. We have looked at all the references in the list archive, searched on google and even rebooted the box but no joy.

# df -k /opt
Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on
/dev/md/dsk/d50 11715620 8750343 2848121 76% /opt
#
# du -sk /opt
4334022 /opt
#
# uname -a
SunOS tester 5.8 Generic_108528-17 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-80

Any thoughts on how to proceed would be much appreciated.
