Hello everyone,

We are now planning to upgrade a production server
from combination Sparc20/Solaris 2.6 to combination
Ultra60/Solaris 8. Here are two plans:

Plan A:
1) ufsdump every file system on Sparc20.
2) install Solaris 2.6 on Ultra60.
3) ufsrestore every file system of Sparc20 to Ultra60.
Some boot and device tree problems will occur and must
be solved in this step during ufsrestore root file
system.
4) Upgrade Solaris from 2.6 to 8 on Ultra60.

Plan B:
1) ufsdump every file system except root on Sparc20.
2) install Solaris 2.6 on Ultra60.
3) ufsrestore every file system except root of Sparc20
to Ultra60. Copy /etc from Sparc20 to Ultra60.
4) Upgrade Solaris from 2.6 to 8 on Ultra60.

The only difference between Plan A and Plan B is if
the root file system needs to be ufsdumped and
ufsrestored from the Sparc20 to the Ultra60. I think
it is not necessary to ufsdump/ufsrestore the root
file system from the Spar20 to the Ultra60. Only /etc
needs to be transferred from the old system to the new
system. So, plan B is a better way. Am I right on
this?

Any advice/suggestion/comment? Please help!

Thank you!
