new-used T3+ configuration difficulties

Hello Gurus,

As usual I'm probably missing the boat on a simple subject, but again as
usual this is a new experience.

I have a new/used T3+ array plugged into a 4500 server and into the
network hub of our lab for configuration/testing.

I was able to assign an IP address using RARP/Jumpstart on our 4500
server.
I am able to telnet to the T3+ and login. When I login, right after the
version banner, I get an error message:
"6.1/: unknown error"
followed by the previous owner's hostname of the T3.
I attempt to change the password with the "passwd" command. It fails
with the error:
"No more than 1 characters, please!"
Well ok then, I can leave that alone for now.
So I proceed to set the gateway, netmask, hostname, and tzset seemingly
successfully.
Then I try to set the date using:
"date 200305200800.00" (yyyymmddHHMM.SS)
At this point the system hangs and does nothing.
Eventually I am able to log back in, and all of the previous settings
are gone and the "...unknown error" is everpresent upon login.

A couple of other random things I did:
"fru list" works but does not list the drive vendors, model, revision,
or serial.
"port list" hangs the system in the same manner as "date..."
"sys stat" hangs the system
"vol mode" hangs the system
"fru stat" hangs the system

Is there some kind of "set defaults" command?

Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

Regards,
Kevin
