Alright,
Firstly -- Kiddies aren't going to have 0-day. And Kiddies are exactly
who would be fooled by a simple port change. A port change isn't going
to fool me. I assure you it's only going to fool the lowest of the low..
Secondly -- 0-day comes out? That's the whole reason it's called 0-day.
The whole concept is the exploits based on vulnerabilities not yet
released. See, if a 1-day comes out, usually, if the author of said
software is worth his salt, he's fixed the code as most likely he's been
informed of his error. Even if he hasn't. Someone has tapped him on the
shoulder and I assure you he'll be fixing it soon or if MS, releasing a
patch within 30 days. ;-)
Thirdly, I have to agree. This change is so basic, there's no reason to
do it whatsoever. The problem is that most programs automagically grab
banners these days, if fed the right options (nmap for instance) and
your fooling no one. It's not as if the server doesn't respond with a
fairly detectable banner in it's default configuration.You might as well
paste a wig and fake moustashe on your server. :)
Changing the port on such a well documented and fingerprinted service,
is nothing more than security through obscurity.
