[HPADM] SUMMARY: Break the mirror question

Most people said that physically pulling the disk out was the best way
to save the mirror for later booting in the event of problems. I
neglected to mention my OS was 11i v1, but if I was on v2 or later
several people suggested Dynamic Root Disk, or DRD, a free download tool
from HP. Worth looking into when we upgrade.

Bill Hassell had the solution that I needed, which was to remove the
alternate disk from vg00 when I begin loading the ignite tape. Ignite
will only disable the mirror if it remains in vg00. The first tab on the
ignite interactive screen allows you to choose which disks are to be in
vg00. If you only select the primary disk, and leave the mirror out,
then it should be bootable. I did not test this, but Bill is such a
reliable source of excellent information that I'd bet it's just the
ticket!

Subject: Break the mirror question

Hi all,

I am trying to do something that HP says I can't do :-) and I just want
to confirm that they are right. I have my system disk mirrored, and I
want to know if I can break the mirror in such a way that I can still
boot off either disk. HP says the only way to do that is to physically
pull the alternate disk out of the enclosure, then push it back in if I
want to boot from it. This seems crazy to me. I am about to boot from
an ignite tape and resize all of the primary disk's logical volumes,
which then requires loading everything from the tape to get it back in
working order. If this tape doesn't load correctly I want to be able to
boot off the mirror and get back to square one. Surely there is a way
to do this? HP claims when you load an ignite tape it marks the mirror
as unbootable, because it's no longer like the primary. I suggested
breaking the mirror prior to making the ignite tape, so the info on the
tape doesn't know about the copy, but they say lvreduce will do the same
thing, making the alternate disk unbootable. Anyone ever do this?

Thanks in advance,

Cindy
