Few friends in the list have contacted me for more information about NTP. I
find Bill's responce is very helpful that I would like to share with all of
you again. Thanks, Bill and Others.

Much too complicated. Don't put anything in the drift file. xntpd will
manage it's contents. Put all your time sources in /etc/ntp.conf
and add the drift file name. ntp.conf has a huge number of comments
which can be completely deleted (an original copy of ntp.conf is
found in /usr/newconfig/etc). Your entire ntp.conf file would be:

     server 0.pool.ntp.org
    server 1.pool.ntp.org
    server 2.pool.ntp.org
     driftfile /etc/ntp.drift

However, you might want to add alternate sources such as
rolex.usg.edu and time.nist.gov. As I mentioned, 5 or more
sources are recommended for highest reliability. Always
test a new source by using:

     ntpq -p rolex.usg.edu

You will be querying the NTP server to check not only
accessability but read it's own server list. ntpq -p without
a server name checks your own server.

And to bounce the xntpd daemon, just use:

   /sbin/init.d/xntpd stop
   /sbin/init.d/xntpd start

You'll see the startup messages in syslog. NOTE: this
bounce will 'jump' the time if necessary. If your client is
running an active database, you might want to put the
database in a readonly or backup mode, then bounce
the xntpd service and put the databases back online.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for the information. The www.ntp.org NTP server mentions about the
pool of NTP servers. If I use the pool, I have to do the following tasks
(not sure if this is correct).

1. Create /etc/ntp.drift file with the following lines:
    server 0.pool.ntp.org
    server 1.pool.ntp.org
    server 2.pool.ntp.org
2. Un-comment line "#driftfile /etc/ntp.drift" in /etc/ntp.conf
3. Bounce NTP daemon.

Step.
