[HPADM] SUMMARY Switch two systems IP and hostnames with each other....

The original question was....

Admins,

I need to switch two systems IP and hostnames with each other.

The /etc/hosts files are the same on both systems (They both have each others IP and host name in them)

Their subnet mask and gateways are the same on both systems.

I thought I would use set_parms hostname xxxxx and set_parms ip_address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Now what I am not sure about is do I need to manually change the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf or will the set_parms handle this? And if I do need to manually change the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf what part of it do I need to change?

When I searched the archives there seemed to be some conflicting information about the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file.

Big TIA and I will summarize.

Tom

Here are the three responses I received....

Hello,
I prefer to make my changes to the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file for these changes. To do this just find the hostname entry in the netconf and make the change. For the IP address, if the box has multiple cards, make sure you change the one that needs to be changed. If your subnet mask, broadcast and route gateway addresses are ok, then just change the necessary ip. Save the file and either do /sbin/init.d/net stop and then /sbin/init.d/net start or do as I do and just reboot the box.
Hope this helps!

Thomas:
set_parms will handle these tasks for you; however, as a rule, I always
check the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf and /etc/hosts file, just in case.
Hope this helps,

Tom,
My personal opinion is to always manually change things so that I know
they
are consistent and so that I only have myself to blame if I mess
something
up... ;-)
Therefore, I would change the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf files and then
reboot
the systems.
I have been burnt enough times by automated tools to shy away from them
if I
know what to do... ;-)
Not that that means I never burn myself, but that's another story...
Hope that helps!!
