I'm still analyzing results, but here is summary to date:
1. EMC recommends that for all UNIX servers you seperate your tape and
disk traffic on seperate HBAs. They will not help you troubleshoot problems
on the path unless you seperate the traffic.
2. Notwithstanding that, some people put both tape and disk traffic on
the same HBA. You must have the right drivers in your kernel. There is a
performance impact, and it's not recommended for PROD only Development.
3. EMC ESN Manager will zone a tape connection just like it does a disk
connection - WWN to WWN. No problem.
4. Most tape drives have been FC-AL to date. Nobody could verify
whether the new L80 is directly FC-SW (I could look it up on the STK web
site, I guess.). If your L80 is FC-AL, then you need another switch, like a
brocade, between your Connectrix and your L80 to convert FC-SW to FC-AL.
5. If you have another brocade in front of your L80, then you don't
need one connection to the brocade for every drive. You only need one
connection for every drive from the brocade to the L80, plus one for the
robot arm. You must then calculate the number of connections from the
Connectrix to the Brocade based on throughput/concurrency. (I have some
numbers, but not right in front of me.).
I will summarize fully after I digest the response I got and verify on the
STK web site.

Hello. Our L80 is attached via scsi (each drive uses a scsi card--so we
have 3 drives, 3scsi connections). I do remember Storage Tek talking about
the fabric connection but at the time I didn't have 3 ports available on
the brocade switch. I had assumed it would need 3 connections, like the
scsi--one per drive. I don't really understand this method they are
speaking of whereby you use the one HBA for both tape and disk? It would
seem that the card would be a bottleneck especially at backup times. Did
you learn anything else about this setup?

Yes we are using backup software, Legato NetWorker. I was just wondering
if
the L80 really talked switched-fabric, and if I could configure both the
tape and disk to the same HBA on the HP rp7410. The last place I worked
wanted the HBAs to be seperated - HBAs for disk only and other HBAs for
tape
only. How do you do it?

Very interesting. We have a L80 (SCSI) attached to an HP rp7400 which is
defined to a brocade switch/Symm 8430. I thought you needed to get the
backup software vendor involved in this type of backup (ours is Veritas)
which involved yet more expensive software from their end. Maybe you just
zone it using the HBA and EMC writes to it like a disk? Let me know what
you find out.

We use ESN Manager to zone and add Volume Access to our HP 9000 UNIX
Servers, Connectrix ED1032 switch, and EMC Symmetrix 8430.
We are looking at an STK L80 Tape Silo (?).
The STK salesman, who is actually a 3rd party VAR, tells us that the L80
runs switched fabric and can be hooked up directly to the Connectrix and
zoned like we zone our EMC today.
I don't recall seeing any HP-UX server to EMC Connectrix to STK L80 options
in ESN Mgr!
How does one connect this up and use it?
My previous experience with STK tape libraries is that they were FC-AL and
ran on completely seperate HP-UX HBAs to completely seperate Brocade
switches to the STK library. No mixing.
