Jim -

Singe user mode:

1. Reboot the system
2. When the system is "searching for potential boot devices", press ESCAPE and
hold it until you get a prompt.
3. At the prompt, type "b primary isl"; if you don't have the primary path
set, you can specify the drive to boot from by "b scsi.6.0 isl" (assuming the
disk at SCSI address 6)
4. At the ISL> prompt, type "hpux -iS disc(;0)/hp-ux"
5. The system will come up in single user mode.

(this was taken verbatim from an old message to this newsgroup)

The DHCP part:

This may or may not be your problem, but I have had to disable
/sbin/auto_parms (moving it to autoparms.org or some such), precisely
because the machine would hang when apparently looking for DHCP
servers when executing this script. I've only seen it under 10.20,
and not on all 10.20 systems ... (hmmm...).

Moving or removing the script has no ill effects that I am aware of,
once the system has been carried beyond the initial configuration
when first installed. My remaining 10.20 systems run and reboot fine
without it.

Hope this helps,

Steen

Today, I moved it to my office at work and did all the configurations I needed and actually got things working. Well I made a change to the hostname of the server via set_parms and the box rebooted......... now the box boots, but I can't get to the box via the SWC.... I see the system going through it's testing and doing the checks on the filesystems, and then it as it starts the init scripts, I see the first line when it is looking for a DHCP server (which I'm not using, I have a static IP configured) the SWC hangs........ Nothing, natta, zilch. Is there a way to take this to single user mode? The archives stated I need to change something in the inittab, but as you can see, I can't get there..... I do have an ignite tape of this server at home, but I need to get this up and running and don't want to go through the ignite !

(PS please, next time, break your lines at something less than
80 characters -- we don't all use mail-readers that format the text,
and you message actually made pretty difficult reading for that reason)
