Dear Admins,
        the consensus, correct, was that stty has @ defined as eol or
such. As a matter of fact it was defined as kill. The scary part is that
the /etc/profile was last touched on May 8 and the problem manifested
itself on June 11. I added stty -kill ^U in /etc/profile and the problem
went away, but i still don't know what caused it. The work around is to
use \@ in place of @, of course. Thanks go to: Justin Willoughby, Stuart
