After fiddling with this some more, the following solution works.
Put an entry for remote_host in my host's /etc/hosts file
and an entry for my host in remote_host's /etc/hosts file.
Seems like the swlist/swinstall commands are ignoring DNS for name
resolution.
I have
hosts: files dns
in my /etc/nsswitch.conf
hosts: dns files
doesn't make any difference either.
Only making an entry in /etc/hosts lets me use
swlist -d @ <name of remote host>
and not just
swlist -d @ <ip address of remote host>

Subject: [HPADM] swlist/swinstall <remote host> problem ..
List:
I am unable to use swlist -d @ <remote_host> to list sw available on
<remote_host>.
I keep getting the error
ERROR: Could not contact host "<remote_host>". Make sure the hostname is
correct
and an absolute pathname is specified (beginning with "/").
ERROR: More information may be found in the daemon logfile on this target
(default
location is <remote_host>:/var/adm/sw/swagentd.log).
I have verified (both on my host where I am running swlist and on
<remote_host>) that:
nslookup <remote_host> works fine. (both A and PTR lookups)
hostname is set correctly on <remote_host>
verified /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/nsswitch.conf
ping <remote_host> from either host works fine.
/usr/contrib/bin/check_patches is fine.
Both hosts are running the Dec 2002 patch bundle.
After telneting to <remote_host>:
I don't see any messages in <remote_host>:/var/adm/sw/swagentd.log
swacl -l host on <remote_host> gives me:
...
any_other:cr--t
swacl -l root on <remote_host> gives me:
...
any_other:-r--t
swacl -l depot on <remote_host> gives me:
There is no depot ACL at <remote_host>
swlist -d @ <remote_host>:<depot_dir> works fine locally on <remote_host>.
I need access to some depots that were packaged and registered on
<remote_host>
but am unable to because of the above problem.
Using swinstall using the IP address of <remote_host> is working OK.
The problem is when using a name for the source host while selecting the
source.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you
Subu
