[HPADM] RE: Why du command shows different?

Hi

Thanks for the reply

This is a part of large filesystem, No hard links, no soft links. This
directory contains "n" number of empty subdirectories and some txt files
under subdirectories. I am using rm -rf for removing first and then tar for
copying. I am sure that I am getting all the files and directories are
getting created in target. Only du sees with different eye. I am more
concerned about du, what du exactly does? How it is calculating the size?
Is it not reliable enough?

Have you also checked what df (or bdf) reports? Do they differ?

What is your copy command? is it a kind of backup-here-restore-there copy
or do you use ordinary copy? How does your copy command co-op with
hardlinks and softlinks? How about mountpoints? How about following
softlinked directories?

Is the directory structure a single filesystem? or is it part of a larger
filesystem? If it is a single filesystem at both sides, consider a dd copy
to have a real image.
