[HPADM] Renaming files in a directory

ALL,
   I am trying to write a script that renames the files in a directory:
from

patient_statement_...
pateint_statement_...
...
etc

to

30310.1
30310.2
...
etc

It could be underscores but I must rename all of the files
in order to ftp them to a dos system ...

Any help would be appreciated !!!
