[HPADM] RE: RE: SUMMARY: How to Configure a DNS Client

Philip Ford and Bill Hassell recommended changing the hosts line in
nsswitch.conf to look at /etc/hosts first. Bill also recommended removing
the arguments for the dns portion of the entry. I have made use of both
suggetions. See Bill's explanation below.

Thanks, Philip and Bill!

Just a note for simplicity: the default behavior (from: man switch) is
to always return on success and always continue if something doesn't work.
So the hosts linb can be simplified to: hosts: dns files

A performance note: if your DNS servers are a bit slow or you do a lot of
work with your local machines (like a network backup), you can avoid
querying the DNS servers for machines they know nothing about by changing
to: hosts: files dns

What this does is to allow you to put your most important IP addresses
into /etc/hosts (which remains in memory) and if the query isn't found
in /etc/hosts, go on to the DNS server(s). Backup programs like Omniback,
Legato, Veritas, etc all query the hostname for EVERY file. So for millions
of files, there will be millions of hostname lookups (I know, it's a dumb
design). So putting your production machine IP addresses into /etc/hosts
and looking there fiorst will avoid a huge network load on the DNS servers.
Your DNS administrator can verify this behavior.

/etc/hosts doesn't need to be very big...just put the important local
machines
there. And since you won't be changing the IP addresses on these servers
every
week, maintenance is simple.
