Thanks to Dan Johansson, Richard Wright, Allan Marillier, Leon Kazakin,
John Adams, George Bodnar, Ilan Green, Tom Stout, and Jeff Cleverly for
their responses.

The original question along with the responses follows:

>>Is anyone using EMC meta-volumes with their HP systems yet?
Quite a few apparently.

>>If you are, would you mind sharing some details such as:

>>What size hyper-volumes are you using?
Most are using 4 or 8 GB hyper-volumes although at least two are using 13.7
GB hypers.

>>How many hyper-volumes are you using in each meta-volume? (4?, 8?)
The most common answer was 4 but some were using 8 and some as few as 2.
This creates various size meta-volumes but the majority seem to be using 34
GB meta-volumes although some were as small as 17 GB and some as big as 108
GB.

>>What stripping depth are you using?
Most didn't know or didn't answer. Two knew were using 920 KB, one knew
why.
920 KB is the default size used by EMC because that is exactly two
cylinders.

>>How many meta-volumes do you put in a volume group?
Varied depending on the need. Anywhere from 2 to 49 meta's per VG.

>>Do you use any type of OS based stripping with the meta-volumes? (e.g.:
LVM
stripping or extent based stripping)
A few are using OS based stripping (LVM) but most are not.
The white papers I've seen from EMC show very little performance gain by
stripping at the OS level although at least one person said they've seen
just the opposite. Guess you have to decide if the increase in performance
is worth the increase in administration.

>>Did you increase your SCSI queue depth after going to meta-volumes?
Only one person changed the queue depth.

>>What are you using meta-volumes for?
This varied widely (as I would expected) but people are using meta volumes
for just about anything. Oracle filesystems was a pretty common theme.

>>Problems?
One person reported that SDDR (Symmetrix Dynamic Disk Reallocation) does
not work with meta-volumes.

>>Good news?
Almost everyone reported performance increases. Other bonuses include the
decreased number of LUN's and easier management.

>>Bad news?
None really.
